Parent Accommodation – Staying On The Ward
Most wards in CHI at Crumlin include purpose-built beds and/or chair beds for parents/guardians to stay in a child’s room where permitted. Fold-up mattresses are available and can be collected from a cupboard on the landing beside the Parents Accommodation Unit. Sheets and blankets are provided by the ward or you can use your own sleeping bag if preferred. Parent showers are available on some wards. Ask on the unit your child is admitted to if a parent shower is available – parents must provide their own toiletries.
Only one parent is permitted to stay on the ward at a time.
Ask your child’s Clinical Nurse Manager about staying on the ward.

Parent’s accommodation is located on the 2nd floor beside the entrance to Medical Tower 1 (stairs to the right). Booking can be made via the reception during office hours – out of hours please ask your child’s named nurse. Children are not permitted to stay in the Parents Accommodation Unit.

  • The accommodation unit has showers and a bath – parents must provide their own toiletries.
  • Two kitchens with microwave, fridge, toaster, hob (no oven). Both of their kitchens are stocked daily with fresh bread, milk, tea, coffee, sugar, butter, jams & cereals.
  • Laundry room – two washing machines, two dryers, an iron and ironing boards are available– laundry pods available for 50c each.
  • Meals are donated by companies most evenings – noticeboard outside kitchen provides details on scheduled meals.

Mobility issues while staying in the accommodation unit
If you are a wheelchair user, have mobility issues or are finding walking difficult after delivery of your baby, the accommodation unit can be accessed via elevator. Contact the accommodation team above to find out about the elevator to this area.

Special rates apply for medical card holder’s €9 single or €25 double
If the room rates cause any financial difficulties for you, your local Community Welfare Officer may be able to assist you with financial aid prior to your arrival to the hospital.

Charitable accommodation
Ronald McDonald House provides low-cost accommodation for families with a child receiving inpatient care at Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

You usually need a referral from a member of staff in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, but parents or guardians are welcome to contact the House directly to enquire about accommodation. There is often a waitlist so you should ask for a referral as soon as possible once you know when your child will be in hospital.

Parent Kitchens on wards
Access to a parent kitchen and the equipment and supplies available in each can differ depending on the unit your child is being admitted to. See the CHI ward information for more information. Parent tip – Bring your own supply of tea, coffee etc and a travel/reusable mug.

Parent Accommodation Unit
Parents staying in the accommodation unit have access to two kitchens with fridge, microwave, hob, toaster, kettle etc. Tea, coffee, sugar, toast etc is supplied daily and companies also donate food which is provided a number of evenings each week.

Hospital Canteen
Parents can use the hospital canteen – patients are not allowed. There are some specific times which are staff only – this is on a sign on the door.

  • Open Monday to Friday 8-2pm. Closed Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.
  • Breastfeeding mothers – meal vouchers will be provided by the unit staff for 2 meals (to the value of €7) to be provided on a daily basis from the hospital canteen.

Jellybean Coffee shop: Serving hot and cold drinks and snacks
Location: Located in the Outpatient Department.
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:00pm.

Market Kitchen: Coffee shop serving hot and cold drinks, and snacks.
Location: Opposite the canteen

Hospital Shop
The hospital shop offers drinks, snacks and other essentials.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 07:30am to 09:00pm. Saturday to Sunday, 09:30am to 8:00pm.
The shop is located on the ground floor around the corner from main entrance/information desk.

Local restaurants, takeaways and delivery – these can deliver to the main entrance
See below for local Restaurants providing delivery and collection. Most will deliver at the entry point of Hospital grounds. When you place your order and give them your mobile number, let them know you are at the hospital and they will contact you upon delivery to meet outside the main entrance.

Play specialists
Play specialists are part of multi-disciplinary team specialising in normal and therapeutic play for infants, children and young people both inpatients and outpatients of the hospital. A referral may be required – ask your child’s care team for information.

CIH Volunteer Services
CIH volunteers are available in Crumlin Hospital – Play Volunteers support child led play activities and create a fun environment for children. You will see the Play Volunteers in their red-t-shirts in the playrooms, on the wards or in the Emergency & Outpatients departments.

Visits from your pet – Cian’s Kennels
If you would like your dog to visit your child & your family at Cian’s Kennels Visiting Centre at Crumlin, you must contact info@cianskennels.ie for further information & request a registration form. You cannot bring your dog onsite without discussion/approval from Cian’s Kennels as the hospital must adhere to safety regulations.

Music Therapy
Music Therapy aims to help each person navigate their hospital journey and cope with their experience of illness, treatment and hospitalisation. Support from the music therapist is usually by referral – ask a member of your care team for more information about this support.

Hospital School
There is a full program of learning in the hospital classrooms and by children’s bedsides for primary and secondary school children and adolescents. The hospital school can also help students prepare for or sit state examinations.

Medical social workers can provide practical and emotional support for families with a child in hospital.

The hospital Chapel is located on the ground floor and is open 24 hours a day.

Psychology Department
Psychologists help children and young people with the difficult feelings they have about their health condition. The psychology team may also be able to provide support to parents/carers. Ask a member of your care team or social worker about psychology supports that may be available.

Breastfeeding Support
You should contact your child’s nurse, breastfeeding champion or the neonatal Clinical Nurse Specialist if you have any queries about breastfeeding or expressing breastmilk for your child at any stage. You can also ask any member of staff about using the expressing rooms at CHI at Crumlin.

If you have a medical card, discuss applying for a rental pump with your nurse. This can take a few weeks to arrange and must be approved by the HSE.

Accessible parking and entrances
Disabled car parking bays are close to the entrances of the hospital. 
There are 6 designated car parking bays provided directly outside the Outpatient Entrance and 2 designated car parking bays at the Main Reception Entrance. Disabled Driver stickers must be displayed. Parking is free with a Blue Disabled Person’s Parking Permit in disabled parking spaces.

Accessible Washrooms and Changing Facilities including full-size change table
A wheelchair accessible bathroom is provided close to the main entrance.
A wheel-chair accessible bathroom with a full-sized change table (suitable for older children/adolescents) is available close to main entrance. Ask for a swipe card at the information/reception desk (01 409 6316). Go past admitting office and security and take first right. Follow signs for “Changing Place”.

If you need a wheelchair
If you need a wheelchair on arrival there are a number of wheelchairs available at main reception. 

Auditory Assistance / Sign Language Interpreter Services
A sign language interpreter can be provided if booked in advance of your appointment. Please contact the clinic you will be attending to arrange this. 

Sensory Room
There is a sensory room located in the blood tests waiting area in the Outpatient Department.

Inpatient/Day Surgery Waiting area

Waiting area near fish tank has pods where parents can sit, eat, charge phone, work etc.

Hospital Shop
The hospital shop is near the hospital main entrance. Opening hours are: 07.30 – 22.00 Monday to Friday and 09.30 – 20.00 Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays. Provides snacks and drinks and a range of toiletries, toys etc.

ATM
ATM is located in the Out Patients Department across from the coffee shop.

Vending machines
Vending machines are also located throughout the hospital for snacks and drinks. Some are located beside the main canteen, Tower 1 entrance and near the A&E department.

Laundry
Laundry facilities are available for parents staying in the CHI at Crumlin parent accommodation.

Informal complaints can be made directly to a member of hospital staff or a ward/department manager or consultant.

Getting to Temple Street Hospital
Temple Street is based in Dublin city centre. There is no hospital parking and very limited on-street parking. Public transport or drop off is recommended. Please find more information on travelling to Temple Street Hospital here

Parking at Temple Street Hospital
There is no public car park at the CHI at Temple St, Children’s University Hospital. There is only a limited amount of on-street parking around the hospital most of which is paid parking. Public transport or drop off is recommended if possible.

Local parking options
Visitors to Temple Street Children’s Hospital can park at Q-Park (also known as Cleary’s Cark Park) for up to 24h at a cost of €6 with the tickets being validated in the hospital. Alternatively, there are more car parks in walking distance to the hospital, including Ilac Centre, Parnell Street or Jervis centre car park.

Long Term Parking
If your child is likely to be hospitalised for two weeks or more, you can get a discounted parking ticket from the main reception. This allows you to exit from the car parks for 14 consecutive days from the day you validate the ticket.

Blue Badge/Disabled parking
On-street disabled parking spaces are available outside the hospital on CHI at Temple Street. These are free with a disabled parking permit.

Parent Accommodation – Staying on the ward

Some wards allow one parent to stay on the ward with their child overnight on a mattress that is provided. Only one parent is permitted to stay on the ward at a time. Ask your child’s nurse about staying on the ward. Staying on the ward is not an option for every ward.

Parent Accommodation Unit

Temple Street has a small number of rooms in the hospital for parents or guardians to stay. Accommodation cannot be guaranteed, and priority is given to parents and guardians of seriously ill children, postnatal mothers, breastfeeding mothers and those from outside of Dublin.
Please contact the Accommodation Office as soon as you receive an admission date for your child if you’d like to stay.

The parent accommodation unit is located on the second floor with easy access to all wards.

  • Room fees are: €15 for a single room, €25 for a double room
  • Special rates are available for medical card holders at €10 for a single room and €20 for a double.
  • Breastfeeding mothers are free.

Local hospital accommodation
A house is available on Fontenoy Street that can accommodate two families at any given time for a period of two weeks. Those who feel they would like to avail of the house should ask the Parents Accommodation office at the Hospital. Contact Number: (01) 878 4300.

Charitable Accommodation
Hugh’s House provides free accommodation to families while their children are inpatients in Temple Street, Rotunda, Coombe & Holles Street hospitals.

Multi-Sensory Room

It is a specially equipped space that uses equipment like fibre optics, low levels of lighting, wall projections, tactile objects and twinkle lights. Usually, a session in the multi-sensory room is by appointment only. If possible before your appointment or admission, ask a member of staff in your child’s team about accessing this room, or contact the Play Specialist department.

Parking at Tallaght Hospital
There is a multi story, privately owned carpark opposite the hospital. Find more information about parking at the hospital here


This car park can often be full so it can be helpful to have someone drop you off or use alternative local parking. There are a number of other options available in the area. Check Parkopedia for local parking options
Local option – Aldi Parking – €5 per day. Pass hospital main entrance on your right and drive approx 2-3 mins. You will pass under a brick archway, through a roundabout and Aldi Carpark will be on your right in approx 1 minute. It is about a
5-10 min walk to hospital.

Disabled/Blue badge parking spaces
Blue badge parking spaces are available in a dedicated section. To find this area you will pass the main hospital entrance on your right, drive past the new CHI outpatient building on your right and take the next right. The carpark will be on your left.

Finding your child’s outpatient clinic or ward
Inpatient wards are in the old building at Tallaght Hospital on the first floor.
Outpatient appointments take place in either the new hospital (outpatient department A) or old hospital (outpatient department B). The old and new buildings are beside each other but make sure you know which building/department your child’s appointment is in.

Outpatient clinic are located in both the new building (outpatient department A) and the old building (outpatient department B). The new and old buildings are beside each other but make sure you know which building/department the appointment is in.

The new building has a Changing Places full sized changing table and a breastfeeding room.

In-hospital parent accommodation 

On the Ward: Camp beds and bedding are provided to allow one parent to stay overnight with their child on the ward.

Parent Accommodation: 3 free parent rooms are available close to the Children’s wards. These rooms can accommodate two parents. Bedding is provided but you most provide your own toiletries etc. Discuss with a member of the nursing team if you would like to request an overnight room. Access to a room is not guaranteed.

Hospital Canteen
The hospital canteen is called the Phoenix Restaurant and provides a variety of cold and hot meals. The Phoenix is open from 8am to 2pm Monday to Friday.
To find the canteen – coming from the main entrance in the old hospital, proceed to the corridor called hospital street and turn right. Follow this corridor and the canteen is quite a bit down on the left.

Coffee Shop – Old building
The coffee shop is open in the main atrium from 7am – 9:30pm Monday to Friday and 9am-8pm Saturday, Sunday & Bank Holidays.

Woodland Cafe  – New building
A small coffee shop is open everyday inside the entrance to outpatient department A (New building)
Everyday 8am – 8pm

Volunteer Coffee Shop
The Volunteer Coffee shop is located in the reception area of the main entrance hall. It is staffed by volunteers – is open from 9:30am – 4pm Monday to Friday. In CHI at Tallaght, tea and coffee-making facilities are available for parents / guardians.
 

Hospital Shops
A shop located in the main entrance hall of the Hospital where you can buy confectionery, soft drinks, ice cream newspapers, magazines, puzzle books greeting cards, toys (small selection) and toiletries. Opening hours are from 7am – 9:30pm Monday to Friday and 7am-8pm Saturday, Sunday & Bank Holidays.

Parent kitchen on the ward
A parents kitchen is located on each ward. You can make tea, coffee, toast etc here.

Breastfeeding mothers
Meal vouchers are provided for mothers who are breastfeeding/expressing milk for an infant receiving inpatient care.

Playroom
There is a supervised playroom available to inpatients at CHI at Tallaght. It is open Monday to Friday from 10am – 1pm and from 2pm – 4pm.

Hospital School
There is a school situated in the hospital close to the inpatient wards. It is open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 3:10pm during term time.

Social work can provide practical and emotional support for families with a child in hospital. A referral may be required from your child’s care team.

Breastfeeding/expressing at CHI Tallaght
Meal vouchers are available for mothers breastfeeding/expressing for a baby/infant receiving care.
Breast pumps are also available on the ward.
Ask a member of staff about breastfeeding/expressing supports.
Dedicated private breastfeeding rooms are currently only available in CHI outpatient department A (New building).

Sensory room
There is a small sensory room available in the outpatient department in the old building (Outpatient dept B).

Changing places full size change room
A changing room with an adult size change table is available in the CHI Outpatient Department in the New building.

Accessible parking and entrances
Disabled car parking is available close to main entrances. Approximately 8 disabled parking spaces are available if you drive past the main hospital entrance on your right), keep going past New Building (Outpatient A) with the coloured wall outside and turn right. The disabled parking section will be on your left.

Wheelchairs
Please enquire at the main reception or phone ahead to request a wheelchair.

Sign language or sensory supports
Contact the outpatient department or ward to confirm if additional supports are available.

Getting to CHI Connolly
People can get to CHI at Connolly by car or public transport. Please find more information on travelling to CHI at Connolly here

Parking at CHI Connolly
The main public car parks are located at the front of Urgent Care building and a small number of parking spaces are available at the rear of the hospital building. Parking is limited so if possible try and get someone to drop you off or use public transport. Leave plenty of time to find a space if you plan on using the hospital parking as you may need to wait for a space.

Parking in the hospital car park is by pay and display (coins only) or the ParkMagic App.
Make sure you pay for enough time or add time if you run out, as clamping is in operation.

  • Pay and display – This is COINS only
  • ParkMagic App – You can pay through the ParkMagic website or App. You need to register with ParkMagic.
    You cannot pre-book parking at Connolly. When you have parked, select On-Street Parking – Dublin, Blanchardstown Hospital, and the length of time you require.
    If you need extra time you can book more time with ParkMagic.

Blue badge/disabled parking
Disabled car parking bays are close to the main entrances. Parking is free in these spaces with a blue badge.
