CUH can be reached by car, bus and taxi or by walking from local parking.
This page provides useful information about getting to CUH.

Parking
Hospital car parks are usually very busy or full. Arrive early as you often have to wait for a space or consider using other local parking.

The current parking charge is €2.70 per hour with a daily maximum charge of €15. A reduced daily charge of €10 is available to patients, carers and visitors by contacting the security department inside the main entrance or by phone at 021 492 2118.

Pay stations are located at the steps leading to the main hospital entrance and to the rear of the Glandore centre which serve the ED and Outpatients car parks. All pay stations accept both cash and card payments.

Long term parking
Ask security about a discount for long term parking – longer than a week 021 492 2118.

Disabled/Blue badge parking
Disabled parking spaces are available close to the main hospital entrance and emergency department.

Getting to the ward/unit
If you come through the main entrance, go past the admission and security desk. You will go down a corridor.

  • Seahorse Outpatient department will be on you left.
  • Keep going down the corridor and you will reach the lifts to get to the children’s inpatient wards.

In-hospital parent accommodation
They provide a reclining chair for one parent or carer to stay with their child. Brothers or sisters are not allowed to stay in the wards. The parent lounges on the wards usually have a supply of tea, coffee, bread etc available.

Charitable accommodation
Home from Home Brú Columbanus is a charity that provides free accommodation for relatives of seriously ill patients in any of the Cork Hospitals. You can find more information here, or speak to your nurse. Families in need of accommodation are referred to Brú through the clinical nurse manager, their deputy or social worker. They determine if the family meets the criteria for admission.

Parent kitchen
There is a parents’ room on the ward. This contains some kitchen units, microwave, fridge, hot and cold water dispensers. A selection of cereals, tea, coffee, juices, milk, butter a small selection of sandwiches is available in this room. If you notice that any supplies are running low, please advise a member of staff. Toast and juice is served to parents in the morning. You are also welcome to store a limited supply of your food in fridge. Please label each food item with your name and date.

CUH Coffee Shops
Parents are welcome to use any of the coffee shop facilities in CUH. There are two Coffee Doc cafes in CUH, located in the Cardiac Renal Centre Atrium (behind security desk inside the main entrance) and at the Adults Outpatients Department Foyer.

In the attached maternity hospital (CUMH) a Bagel Cafe/Juice Bar and a coffee shop are located adjacent to the main entrance.

Canteen
Parents/visitors are allowed to use the staff canteen located near the chapel – patients are not allowed to use the staff canteen.

Delivery
You can arrange for takeaway food to be delivered to the main hospital entrance – you will need to meet them when they arrive. The food should not be brought to the ward.

Patient Supports

Play specialist
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am – 4.30pm

Play specialists are part of multi-disciplinary team specialising in normal and therapeutic play for infants, children and young people both inpatients and outpatients of the hospital. A referral may be required – ask your child’s care team for information.

Volunteer Play Services
Volunteer play services are provided by Children In Hospital Ireland volunteers in the hospital. Watch out for the red t-shirts.

Play room
The Playroom is currently situated on Puffin ward on the 5th Floor. If a child/teen is too ill to come to the playroom or cannot come because of isolation or bedrest (or they simply prefer to stay in their room) then play can be provided at the bedside. Older children and teenagers are provided for with a selection of books, board games, Nintendo DS’s, Tablets and Arts and Craft activities.

Hospital school
Cork University Hospital School is a two-teacher school that provides educational support to patients at Primary and Secondary school level.

Social Work
The Medical Social Work Department offers a number of services to patients and their families. The service focuses on the social and emotional aspects linked to a patient’s admission to hospital. Medical social workers can also advise and assist you with applications for government supports and entitlements.

Wheelchairs
If you need to borrow a wheelchair, please ask at main reception. They will lend you one if it is available.

Disabled bathroom
There is a disabled bathroom located in the corridor past the information desk and security desk at the main entrance. Ask at the information desk for the code.

Quiet room
If your child has sensory or additional needs there is a quiet room available on the Seahorse Day Unit on the ground floor, named The Koala Room. This room can be used for waiting and for seeing health professionals. It may be useful to call ahead to see if you can use this room. Seahorse Day Unit 021 492 2187

Your child’s additional needs
If your child has a mobility, communication, vision, hearing or literacy difficulty let the clinic or ward staff know in advance or when you arrive.

Amenities in the Hospital

Shop
The hospital shop is run by a private company and is located on the Main Hospital Concourse near Main Reception. Opening hours Monday to Friday 7:30am – 8:30pm Saturday & Sunday 9:00am – 8:00pm.

There is also a shop in the nearby Cork University Maternity Hospital by the main entrance.

ATM
An ATM is located by the Emergency Department

Other Local Amenities

Wilton Shopping Centre: Located across the road from the Hospital. It offers a variety of restaurants, stores, pharmacy etc. With a purchase from the shopping centre you can also park here for free for 3 hours.

Pharmacy

Parking
There is no on site parking. Disc parking is available on the surrounding streets but this parking is extremely busy and difficult to find spaces.

Parking is also available in the nearby multi-story car parks at Dunnes Stores Shopping Centre, North Main Street and Q Park St. Finbarr’s Car Park near River Lee Hotel on the Western Road.

Parking is available for €8 for 24 hours from the Q-Park at St. Finbarr’s – The ticket must be validated at the hospital shop.

Blue Badge/Disabled parking
There are a number of wheelchair accessible parking spaces directly in front of the hospital and at the back of the hospital just after the traffic lights on the left-hand side.

Admissions
Upon entering the hospital main entrance and after passing the reception area, the admissions office is located immediately inside the inner door to the right.

On the ward

A recliner is provided at the child’s bedside and one parent is allowed so stay overnight. Pillows and blankets are provided. A parents washroom and show is available – you will need to bring your own toiletries.

Brú Columbanus is a charity that provides accommodation for relatives of seriously ill patients in any of the Cork Hospitals. Please find more information here, or speak to your nurse. Families in need of accommodation are referred to Brú through the clinical nurse manager, staff nurse or social worker. They determine if the family meets the criteria for admission.

Fidelma House
Fidelma House is a home-from-home accommodation, close to to the Mercy University Hospital, Cork, which the Children’s Leukaemia Association can offer to families while their child is being cared for in the Children’s Leukaemia Unit. Please find more information here.

There is a restaurant and a coffee shop for staff and visitors located on the ground floor of the hospital. Parents/relatives can use these facilities at all times – It is busy here between 12.45pm to 2pm.
Please note parents are currently not able to use the restaurant until further notice.

Coffee shop: Open 10am – 3pm Monday to Friday only – closed weekends and bank holidays

Out-of-hours food and beverage vending is located in several locations on the hospital campus.

Delivery
You can arrange for takeaway food to be delivered to the main hospital entrance – You will need to meet them when they arrive. The food should not be brought to the ward.

Patient Passport
MUH provide a useful personal health passport for children with complex medical needs or additional needs.

Hospital chapel and pastoral care
The hospital chapel is situated on the ground floor near the main lifts. You are always welcome to spend quiet time in the chapel.

Supports
If your child has a mobility, communication, visual, hearing or language difficulty let the ward nurse manager know either before your child’s admission if special arrangements or supports are required, or on admission.

Blue-badge/Disabled parking
There are a number of wheelchair accessible parking spaces directly in front of the hospital and at the back of the hospital just after the traffic lights on the left-hand side.

Parking

Hospital car parks are usually very busy or full. Arrive early as you often have to wait for a space.

There is a very busy public car park with 65 car spaces available at the main entrance. This is pay parking. Tickets are issued at the entrance barrier. Tickets must be paid for at one of the pay stations. A pay station is located outside the main entrance door with a second pay station inside the main entrance door. The pay stations accept both card and cash payments. It is an hourly rate but if staying for 24 hrs the charge is 13.50 Euro.

Disc parking and clamping is in operation in the street around the hospital so don’t forget about your parking disc. Discs are available from the shop across the road from the main entrance. The spaces are charged at an hourly rate

Blue badge/Disabled Parking
There are three disabled parking spaces available next to the Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Department. Additional disabled parking spaces are located on the Old Blackrock Road near the entrance to the South Infirmary Complex. Admissions office Is located just inside the main entrance

  • At the main doors of the South Infirmary walk in past Main Reception. Follow the corridor and walk up the stairs on the left hand side. At top of stairs turn right and you can follow signage to the Children’s Ward.

This is a 14 bedded unit for children located in the South Infirmary side of the hospital. At the main doors of the South Infirmary walk in past Main Reception. Follow the corridor and walk up the stairs on the left hand side. At top of stairs turn right and you can follow signage to the Children’s Ward.

On the ward
One parent / guardian can stay with their child overnight. An armchair next to your child will be provided by the night staff. Pillows and blankets are provided.

Staff restaurant
The Staff Restaurant is open every day to everyone from 7:30am to 5pm serving hot lunch from 12:30pm to 2:15pm daily.

Vending machines
There are a number of vending machines throughout the hospital.

  • Orthopaedic Outpatients Department waiting room supplying water, soft drinks, chocolate and crisps.
  • Outside the Staff Restaurant supplying water and soft drinks.
  • Victoria Complex ground floor corridor supplying water and soft drinks.

Parking at University Hospital Limerick
Hospital car parks can be very busy or full. Arrive early as you often have to wait for a space.

There are three car parks on the hospital campus. The cost for parking is €2 per hour for the first 2 hours and €1 an hour after that. The maximum parking charge for 24 hours is €10. Ticket machines are at various locations including inside the main hospital entrance.

Reduced parking rate
Reduced overnight parking rates are available for families with a child who is an inpatient.

Inpatient Wards
The Children’s Ark is made up of 3 main areas

  • The Rainbow Ward is for babies and young children up to 3 years of age.
  • The Sunshine Ward is for children from 3 years up to 16 years.
  • The Caterpillar Day Ward is for children having oncology shared care with Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin. It is also for children who need blood transfusions, diabetes care and other services.

The Paediatric High Dependency Unit (PHDU) has 2 beds for children who need high dependency nursing and medical care.

The Cystic Fibrosis Unit coordinates all care of paediatric cystic fibrosis patients.

The Paediatric Diabetes Care Department provides general diabetic care.

Most of the inpatient rooms are shared rooms and there can be a lot of noise.

On the ward
One parent can stay overnight in a recliner next to their child.

Parent Kitchen
A parent kitchen is available for parents with children receiving inpatient care to use. A microwave, kettle and fridge is available and tea and coffee is provided.
The parent kitchen is at the entrance to the Ark Department.

Hospital restaurant
The hospital restaurant is open every day for breakfast and lunch. The restaurant closes for between the breakfast and lunch service.
Opening hours are posted outside the entrance to the restaurant.
The restaurant is found by taking the right after the main entrance and follow this corridor until it opens out into a space leading to a number of corridors. Keep left and watch out for signs for the restaurant.

Hospital cafés
There are two cafés in the hospital located in the main entrance/general admissions area and located along the main hospital corridor near the entrance to the Ark department. The main entrance café is open every day. The café near the Ark department is closed weekends.

Play room and play specialists
The playroom is open Monday to Friday and provides a fun side to life within the hospital. The Children’s Ark has 2 play specialists and a team of play workers.

Play specialists are part of multi-disciplinary team specialising in normal and therapeutic play for infants, children and young people both inpatients and outpatients of the hospital. A referral may be required – ask your child’s nurse for information.

Referrals for specialised play can be made to one of the nurses caring for your child. Children who are inpatients or are attending an appointment in the Children’s Ark can use the playroom.

Outdoor playground
There is an outdoor playground located outside the playroom. The playground is accessed through the playroom and is available during playroom opening hours.

Hospital school
The Children’s Ark School at UHL supports children in primary and secondary school. Children can go to the classroom or they can have bedside classes if they can’t come to the classroom. The school supports children doing state exams while in hospital.

Hospital Shop
Located within the main hospital beside the reception. Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday from 7am to 8pm. Sunday and bank holidays from 9am to 8pm.

There are ATM machines in the Bank Of Ireland across the road from the hospital and the service station next to the hospital. Cashback is available from the shops on the hospital campus

Long-term/discounted parking
Long term or discounted parking rates are available – Ask the security office or the ward manager.

TUH has a children’s ward and paediatric assessment unit

On the ward
One parent is allowed stay overnight on the ward. A parent bed and pillow/blankets are provided.

On the ward
Meals are provided for parents with children staying on the ward. The staff will tell you the meal times.

Hospital Cafe
Located in the main foyer – open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 5pm

Hospital Restaurant
Open 9am to 3pm with hot meals until 2pm. If the area is busy, staff members will take precedence between 1pm and 1.45pm.

Delivery
You can arrange for takeaway food to be delivered to the main hospital entrance – You will need to meet them when they arrive. The food should not be brought to the ward.

Hospital shop
There is a shop located on the ground floor in the main hospital which stocks snacks, drinks, newspapers, magazines, cards and toiletries. Open Monday to Sunday 9am to 5.30pm

Vending Machines
Located in the foyer and emergency department waiting room.

Playroom
There is a small playroom on the children’s ward for children to visit.

Hospital chapel and chaplains
There is a chapel on the ground floor at the hospital entrance. A chaplain is available when required.

If your child has a mobility, communication, vision, hearing or literacy difficulty let the clinic or ward staff know in advance or when you arrive.

Parking
Hospital car parks are usually very busy or full. Arrive early as you often have to wait for a space.

There are a number of car parks for public use. You get a ticket at the barrier when arriving and pay at the ticket machine when leaving. Payment machines are located at the front entrance and at the emergency department. Options will be displayed for daily and long term rates.

Card and cash is accepted.

Outpatient department
The outpatient clinics are located on the first and second floors. The nearest car park is at the front of the hospital close to the main entrance.

On the ward
One parent can stay overnight with their child. Parent chairs or pull down beds are available. Bedding is provided.

Showers – Some rooms have an en-suite bathroom and there is also a shower available in the main bathroom. Parents must provide their own toiletries.

There is no parent kitchen on the ward but meals, snacks and refreshments are provided for parents.

Coffee Shop
A coffee shop and sandwich bar with eat-in and take away facilities is located in the main reception area. Opening hours are 9am to 8pm Monday to Sunday.

The shop is located in the main reception area and is open Monday to Sunday 9am to 9pm.

Weekly activities include Art Kart Mondays and Wednesdays, Musician Tuesdays and Storytelling Thursdays.

Hospital chapel
The hospital chapel is located on the grounds of the Hospital with a small oratory on level 1. Mass is said daily.

ATM
There is a cash machine in the main reception area.
